It was good news for the Blaze Dolphins, Mighty Mannas and Nike Marlins at the opening ceremony of the 12th NTUC Fairprice Foundation National Super League (NSL) 2011. The same can’t be said for the likes of the Bedok King Vipers, M1 Sunfish and Adidas Sneakers Stingrays.  The fight between these 6 teams will continue for the next 7 weeks; as they vie for the championship trophy and a fat cheque of $10,000.

The Marlins played their first game in style against the Stingrays. Putting up a good fight the Stingrays   managed to tie the score at 21 at the end of the second quarter. The Marlins came back in the third, stealing the ball away more than a handful of times and netting 15 goals in that quarter.

But the Stingrays gave the Marlins a run for their money. With an encouraging coach, 3 National Players (open) and a bunch of cheering supporters - the Marlins stole an eight point lead at the final whistle. It will be interesting to see these two teams meet again in round two.

In other matches, the Sunfish had 3 National Players (open) and Goal Keeper Chen Li Li standing at 1.96m; but it was the Mannas that brought the game to a whole new level. Swift, clever and energetic, they led the game in all four quarters; finishing 57-30.

And the Blaze Dolphins over-ran the Bedok King Vipers stamping their mark as a team to be reckoned with in this tournament.

Each team will meet twice in this NSL. Foreign players will join each of these teams in round 5 onwards; promising to give the NSL a more exotic flavour.

The Grand Finals will be held on 16th April 2011. All games are held either at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall or Jurong East Sports & Recreation Centre. Look out for more details here on VOXSPORTS!
